HIU Seminar | Dr. Binson Babu
Dr. Binson Babu will be guest during the upcoming HIU Seminar taking place on Friday, 5th September 2025 at 2pm: The talk will be held in person in the large seminar room (230) at the HIU and streamed under the usual Zoom link: The title of the talk will be “Hybrid Ion Capacitor: The Next Generation Electrochemical Energy Storage Technology”.
Abstract
Hybrid-ion capacitors (HICs) are emerging as high-power energy storage devices that combine the advantages of rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors by integrating their respective electrodes. HICs store and release energy through the simultaneous insertion/extraction of cations at the battery-type electrode and adsorption/desorption of anions at the capacitive electrode.
In my talk, I will provide an overview of HICs, with a particular focus on the use of gel-polymer electrolytes in organic ester- and ether-based systems for Li-, Na-, and K-ion capacitors. Additionally, I will discuss the aging mechanisms of electrodes under various electrochemical conditions, as well as the phenomenon of self-discharge in HICs. The talk will also highlight recent advances in novel electrode materials - such as MXenes and perovskites - for the development of aqueous-based HICs.
