GS-EES Summer School 2025

The GS-EES Summer School 2025 brought together around 40 participants, including 20% national and international non-GS-EES members ranging from Master's students to doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, for an immersive learning experience in the field of energy storage research.

Held from July 14–18 in Wildberg, the Summer School offered a comprehensive program featuring expert lectures, participant's presentations, professional skills workshops, and networking activities - all designed towards fostering interdisciplinary exchange.

 

Program Highlights
 

Expert Lectures

A major highlight of the Summer School was the series of lectures delivered by lexperts from industry and research institutes:

  • Robert Ulrich Bürger (ECO STOR GmbH) shared insights into Battery Energy Grid Storage, underlining the pivotal role of large-scale systems in energy transition.
  • Dr. Edwin Knobbe (BMW Group) explored the Electrochemistry & Mechanics involved in modern battery cell development.
  • Dr. Guinevere Giffin (Fraunhofer ISC) presented a compelling lecture on Battery Recycling with a focus on recent research in direct recycling methods.
  • Dr. Santhana Eswara Moorthy (LIST) introduced cutting-edge electron microscopy techniques in nanoscale in-situ and operando characterization.
  • Prof. Dr. Sonia Dsoke (University of Freiburg) discussed fundamentals and advancements in Supercapacitors and Aluminium Batteries.
  • Dr. Luca Schneider (Leclanché GmbH) offered a practical overview of lithium-ion battery cell production.


Participant's Presentations & Poster Sessions

Participants showcased their work through poster sessions and presentations spread throughout the week, sparking rich scientific discussions and feedback.
 

Professional Skills Workshops

The Summer School also focused on professional skills development. Participants could choose between the two following workshops:

  • How to Write a Scientific Paper
  • From Research to Impact


Socializing & Community Building

A hiking excursion through the scenic Wildberg countryside, followed by a barbecue evening, offered participants a relaxed setting to network and unwind—fostering not just professional, but also personal connections.
