Abstract
Understanding the interplay between redox behaviour and structural stability is crucial for the development of transition metal oxides in electrocatalysis. In this presentation, I will show how in situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) can be used to investigate the electrochemical response of IrO2 catalysts under oxygen reduction (OER) and Mn-based perovskite oxides (La1-xCaxMnO3) under oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) conditions.
XAS enables study of the coordination environment of the metal centre (number of neighbours and distance) and average oxidation state, whilst XES can provide more detail of the speciation of the oxidation states.
The importance of the electrochemical cell design in ensuring that the in situ data are representative of the operando conditions will be emphasised.
